The Meaning of Dreams

Earth is filled with over seven billion beating hearts, seven billion ticking brains, and seven billion weary heads that hit the pillow and fall asleep each night. For around two hours each and every night, these seven billion people dream while tucked in their beds, even if they can’t remember the dreams once they wake up the next day.

More than often these dreams consist of an easy message, maybe seeing a loved one who has passed away, going on holiday with your best friends, or living your wildest fantasies. Dreams have this strange, but beautiful capability of making the imaginary feel real.

But what about those dreams that leave you scratching your head after your alarm clock wakes you up. What about the strange goings on within your resting mind that don’t seem to make much sense at all? What are the true meanings of those dreams?

Being chased
One of the most common dreams known to man, being chased in dreams has been experienced by many people. While it doesn’t represent a fear of the chase itself, it can show unease towards what you’re running from in the dream. Maybe you have been putting something off in your day to day life, whether it’s an action, person or object.

Water
Water is often seen to be a measure of your unconscious mind when it appears in dreams. If the liquid is clear and still, you are likely to be calm and happy. If it is cloudy and rough, or you depict yourself drowning, it can mean that you feel helpless over something in your life.

Vehicles
They often represent a direction in your life, and the journey to a goal. The nature of the journey, whether it is rough or smooth, can also indicate how you are feeling about it.

People
Dreaming of other people can often indicate personal issues or something about an existing relationship. Seeing a partner when you are single can show loneliness for example. Dreaming about a particular person in your life can represent some issues surrounding that person, whether it’s an argument, attraction, or a development in relationship.

School
In these dreams you will often face a test or lesson which corresponds to your real life. It can also mean a need to go back to your childhood to address an issue.   If you can sense your age in your dream, it indicates the approximate age when the issue or incident took place.

Paralysis
An indication that you lack control in your day to day life. The body actually enters paralysis when it dreams, hence why you don’t actually do the things you dream of.  This type of dream can also mean the lack of ability to the action on an important matter.

Death
This represents a change, often the end of one thing and the start of another.  Though alarming, it usually means leaving the past behind and entering a new phase in life.  Though if you dream about causing someone’s death, that may mean you harbor guilty feelings that need to be addressed.

Flying
Dreams about flying often say a lot about your day to day life, and how you are handling it. If you fly smoothly in the dream, you are probably comfortable in your self. If your flight is unsuccessful, you may be feeling uneasy about something.

Falling
Much like unsuccessful flight, falling from a great height can represent a lack of control in real life. However, there have been reports of slow falls in dreams, which can indicate letting go of something.

Nudity
Indicates a feeling of vulnerability in your life.  At the same time, it may mean that you have reached a point in your life where you accept yourself just as you are.   Dreaming of nudity can also mean the release of negative feelings associated with self-rejection.

Baby
Represents the birth of something new, not necessarily a child. It could be a new job, new house, new relationship, anything that has the potential for growth.  A baby also represents welcome responsibilities and new love.

Food
Food is often a dream symbol for energy, knowledge or nourishment.  Depending on the true context of the dream and your current situation, this dream can also symbolize prosperity and abundance or survival.

House
Different rooms of the house can represent different feelings for the dreamer. If you picture yourself trapped in the basement, you may feel as if you are neglecting something or someone. The bedroom is usually linked to intimacy.

Sex
This one can be extremely simple. If you dream of intimacy with a particular person, or even just sex in general, it may represent simple urges. It can also represent intimate connections with your own self, others around you, and new information.

Ancient Egyptians believed that dreams were a different way of seeing, and had trained dreamers who helped plan for future battles. Similarly, the ancient Greeks and Romans saw dreams as predictions of future events, or appearances from beyond the grave.

We now know that dreams in fact indicate thoughts and feelings about the past, present and future, and although they cannot predict the future, they serve as guides and make you aware of hidden emotions.
